Have a great weekend and, hey let’s do it all again next Saturday; May the fourth be with you, and dress up as your fave Star Wars character!!

March parkrun

This one was eventful. First up, Pakapakanthi was cancelled because of the equine event so we knew we might have a free more at ours. Second, a Brisbane guy called Tim (see yesterday’s post) was on his fourth continent and 19th country in a massive run effort in support of the joy of being active, and he was coming to our event on his way from Perth to Brisbane. And third, it was FABULOUS weather for running.

The result? A new attendance record, with 606 participants, plus a bunch of folk volunteering on top. Quite the crowd, and not a bad job of keeping to the left in general, though our opening straight video clip (if we can work out how to upload it)shows a few folk being a little less than committed to keeping left. The camera doesn’t lie.

There were 196 first-timers (WOW!), and we snagged a full set of Aussie tourists with EVERY state and territory represented. Plus cousins from Ireland, England, Scotland, and Aotearoa NZ.

Spirit-of-parkrun pic features Mal McMillan, because he’s done so much for our event and always wears fabulous gear.

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers, and we are now at TWELVE HUNDRED different people who have volunteered at least once at Torrens parkrun!!

Here’s this week’s gang:

Mal MCMILLAN • Ojo DOJO • Dave GRIMES • Speedy GONZALES • Merrilyn MCMILLAN • Glynn NICHOLAS • James CORBETT • Ashleigh GIBSON • Aaron MITCHELL • Linda GARDINER • Kerry OWENS • Sib REDFERN • Melissa DE ZWART • Francesco DE ZWART • Richard WATSON • Marino KOMLUSAN • Peter GARDINER • Paul TEASDALE • Justin WARNER • Coralie WARNER • Gary RAMSEY • Owen GRIMES • Derek HILL • Michael O’FLAHERTY • Amy LEA • Aaron BAXTER • Mary CURRIE • Ashlee MCEWAN • Duong NGUYEN • Guoli HUANG

March parkrun

Crikey it was a little toasty this morning down at Karrawirra Torrens where this week more than 410 people ran, walked, or volunteered at Torrens parkrun, of whom 70 were first timers including tourists from all around the dial of this ancient land, plus folk from England, Northern Ireland, Aotearoa NZ, and possibly other magical places I can’t recall (don’t hate me, I was up at 5.30am for this). Included was Ali, a Run Director from Bushy Park parkrun, where this whole parkrun thing started. Watch for Ali’s guest report that will come through later this weekend.

If you didn’t make it this morning you have TMO (Totally Missed Out) because the event had a volunteer takeover by University of Adelaide, supported by parkrun sponsor Medibank who brought water, bananas, and free merch. It was GREAT, you had to be there. We hope they’ll be back later this year, so don’t miss out.

With some regulars added in to the UniAdelaide/Medibank mix, our event had a mighty 42 volunteers:

Mike ATKIN • Ali KENNEDY • Mal MCMILLAN • Ojo DOJO • Matthew IELASI • Merrilyn MCMILLAN • James CORBETT • Steven WEST • Thomas CASSIDY • Grette WILKINSON • Ashleigh GIBSON • Jennie SHAW • Aaron MITCHELL • Shawna HOOTON • Benjamin M BAYLY • Ben MCCANN • Alan BODDY • Peter STAGG • Melissa DE ZWART • Francesco DE ZWART • Mark Thomas WATERS • Van TRAN-WILLIAMS • Richard WATSON • Marino KOMLUSAN • Daniel LAWLOR • Mike HILL • Hayley HILL • Derek HILL • Jaime ROYALS • Hannah MCGRATH • Peter PUGSLEY • Montgomery MCCANN • Mary CURRIE • Matthew COOPER • Jack Norman WHITE • Jessica KLOSE • Ashley GAULD • Anthea D’ALOIA • Martin MCCARRON • Sarah CARVALHO • Sylvia LIAO • Jiyoung KIM

A special thank you to Grette, long time parkrunner, former volunteer ambassador, and all-round fine person, who played a central role in pulling this event together and building this week’s volunteer crew. And to Brian from Medibank, who with his team brought so much colour (the merch!) and energy. We loved having Uni Adelaide and Medibank hang with us.

Stay cool in the hot weather, have a great weekend, and, hey, let’s do it all again next Saturday.

March parkrun

This was a very special event, because it was Merrilyn’s 500th parkrun volunteer gig! Merrilyn is the first person in the southern hemisphere to get to this milestone, and we are so proud. Merrilyn, along with partner Mal who is also a very longstanding volunteer, is central to our Torrens parkrun culture, and we are so grateful for her contribution. And so typical of Mal and Merrilyn, they organised a buffet for folk to enjoy. Naturally, Merrilyn features in our spirit-of-parkrun pic, with core volunteer team members Ben, James and Ojo, presenting Merrilyn with two ‘thank you scrolls’, where loads of participants from this week’s event wrote down some lovely words of thanks to Merrilyn.

In other news, the timing of our event meant it was still St David’s Day in Wales, so those with Welsh heritage brought a bit of dragon along to the event where 466 people ran, walked or volunteered, of whom a whopping 88 were first timers, and including tourists from elsewhere in SA, WA, Qld, NSW, ACT, Vic, UK, South Africa, and possibly somewhere else we’ve forgotten.

March parkrun

Delightful weather at Karrawirra Torrens this morning, where 396 people ran, walked and volunteered at our event, of whom 52 were first timers including tourists from WA, Qld, NSW, Vic, UK, Japan, South Africa, USA, and Argentina. We figure that’s all the continents covered apart from Antartica.

And from Lochiel parkrun just up the road, Phil Downing returned to the place he did his first parkrun on Australia Day 2013 to complete his 500th parkrun. We think he may be the second South Australian to hit that milestone. Big congrats to Phil. The same well we had people at Torrens doing their very first parkrun. So do please remember, it formed matter how many parkrun events you’ve done, whether it’s your first or your five hundredth, what’s valuable is that you are showing up on a Saturday morning to do a parkrun somewhere, something that’s a feel-good for you and in the company of a lot of other nice people.

And congrats to Torrens regular Ingrid Thompson, who collected her 400th parkrun today, adorned in a beautiful sash announcing this fact.

March parkrun

James Tobin the Channel 7 Weekend Sunrise weather guy James and cameraman Lloyd visited us today to do their live crosses from Torrens parkrun. We knew they were doing one of these at 8am so we made a MASSIVE effort to be ready for 8am start. And we did it!!!

Unfortunately the live cross didn’t happen until 8.06, so we ended up going at the usual time. How funny is that! But thank you to all participants who showed up earlier than usual; we’ll aim for the same next week, where we arrange you in your approximate finish times and then to the main briefing, because that seemed to work well.

Spirit of parkrun pics this week features some of today’s course marshals who missed out on all the stuff with the tv crew because they were out on the course doing a fantastic job as marshals.

It was a big crowd this week, where over 500 people ran, walked or volunteered at Torrens parkrun, with 109 first timers (crikey!) including tourists from WA NT Qld NSW ACT Tas (yep we got the full set) and from UK and Japan.

Have a great weekend and, hey, let’s do it all again (on time) next Saturday.

March parkrun

That was fun! We got to start the year off using the Broo course, and the event went well thanks to the collective efforts of a fabulous bunch of volunteers, some of whom came in at very short notice. This included folk who guided people from the usual assembly area to the weir bridge. It included folk who marshalled the opening straight and through the tunnel, it included people marshaling course spots they weren’t familiar with, and it included no-notice barcode scanners who stepped up and helped us out in a jam. Truly, parkrun is a great community and here at Torrens parkrun we have so many folk who are happy to help. Here’s today’s list:

Harley TEAM VEGAN • Ojo DOJO • Matthew IELASI • Allen WALTERS • Diane Lorraine WALTERS • Steph THOMSON • James CORBETT • Makiko BACHE • Stuart THOMSON • Serena KWONG • Steven WEST • Thomas CASSIDY • Ashleigh GIBSON • Aaron MITCHELL • Benjamin M BAYLY • Judy M BAYLY • Melissa DE ZWART • Francesco DE ZWART • Mark Thomas WATERS • Emily WHITROD • Simon WINDOWS • Marino KOMLUSAN • Peter HINDES • Margaret OUZMAN • Lynette TAYLOR • Sarah LENNON • Justin WARNER • Coralie WARNER • Mike HILL • Hayley HILL • Ben WILCOX • Thomas PAMMINGER • Mary CURRIE • Alex HART • Duong NGUYEN • Chieko LANZON

March parkrun

March parkrun

A late report again, because who isn’t busy with other stuff this time of year.

It was a beautiful morning for event 548, where more than 380 people ran, walked out volunteered at Torrens parkrun, including SANTA. We had 77 first timers including tourists from places that my receding concussion forbids me from remembering.

As featured giving their best ho-ho-ho in the pics in this report, event 548 was made possible by 30 wonderful volunteers:

Harley TEAM VEGAN • Ojo DOJO • David CROSS • Allen WALTERS • Louisa MITCHELL • Glynn NICHOLAS • Steph THOMSON • James CORBETT • Stuart THOMSON • Liam FITZPATRICK • Thomas CASSIDY • Aaron MITCHELL • Benjamin M BAYLY • Thomas MITCHELL • Judy M BAYLY • Melissa DE ZWART • Francesco DE ZWART • Mark Thomas WATERS • Richard WATSON • Marino KOMLUSAN • Jen GIBSON-SMITH • Glenn SMITH • Shona GRANT • Sharon WALTERS • Archie GRANT • Georgina RIDGE • Elodie WHITE • Duong NGUYEN • Grace RIDGE • Matt MARTIN

I just the a moment here to acknowledge this awesome Torrens parkrun community, where so many people show up on the morning checking to see if we have enough volunteers. Thank you to everyone who volunteers, and to those who check that we’re covered.

No time to acknowledge milestoners in this report, but we’ll fine to those who hit a milestone. You can see them in the full results and event history on the Torrens parkrun Results Page.

Cannon Hill parkrun,
